Telangana- The origin of its Name

The Word "Telangana" has its roots in Ancient days. This word was derived from the Name "Trilinga" which was used to identify Telugu people in Puranas and other Literary sources. Godavari River which is the lifeline of Telugu region was said to be known as "Televaha river" in Ancient days, as a consequence people inhabiting that region were called as 'Trilinga's'. In due course of time, this name has changed to Trilinga Desam and Telangana. In contrary to this, It has also been said that the word Telangana is procured from the name' Trilinga' but here it refers to a region resembling Triangle which is located in between 'Three Shiva lingas'- Kaleswaram, Srisailam and Draksharamam. These three lingas demarcated the border of the Telugu speaking region in the erstwhile Hyderabad isolating it from Marathwada and Kannada regions. However, with time, this name has changed to Triling, Telunga, Telanga and Telangana.
